The Goodyear Welted Method of Manufacturing Footwear

The Goodyear Welted Method of Manufacturing Footwear

Posted by Jules McLellan on

A boot made using Dayton’s Goodyear welted technique will give you significantly more life out of your boot. Other methods of putting a boot together may lower manufacturing costs, but as the ol’ sayin’ goes, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”  Keep in mind, work-boots are your most used tool and should be treated as the foundation of your work-life.  A quality Goodyear welted boot will give your body great support and will save you money in the long run by allowing repairs instead of requiring replacement.

So what does it mean to have a boot made with this particular method?      How does it give footwear superior quality over shoes and boots, which have been glued together?  Essentially, the welt is a leather strip sewn to both the upper and insole that is used to sew on the mid and outsoles of the footwear.  The welt also forms a cavity below the insole, which is filled with cork, and over time and use, moulds perfectly to your foot providing glove like comfort.  A durable and water resistant method of construction, there are no interior stitch lines that can have the potential to let in damaging moisture.

The Goodyear welt also gives footwear that distinctive outsole stitch that surrounds the upper.  This can be either a 3/4 welt or a full 360º welt around the sole.  Dayton uses a ¾ welt as we feel this provides a sturdier heel, but both methods are very good.  Beware of footwear constructed with glue but use a fake Goodyear welt to make them look better and fool you into thinking they are better quality.

In this case, quality translates into better support for the bones and muscles in your feet, better defense against ever damaging moisture, and of course, the ability to be re-soled and or heeled when wear and tear eventually does take a bit of a toll.  This means you may get years, (not months) and even decades out of your boots, saving you lots of money over the course of your career.

A few final words of wisdom…if you truly want to minimize the amount of money you spend on work-boots in your life, have a MINIMUM of two pairs to rotate daily.  This will at minimum double the life expectancy of each pair by at least double because you will have been able to properly dry your boots between uses.
